"Moscow", those syllables can start a tumult in the Russian heart." So said Russian's greatest poet Alexander Pushkin. And Moscow may well start a tumult in many other hearts, now that Russia is no longer closed to international travellers. Visitor from all over the world are already experiencing the culture, the beauty and architectural heritage of the historic city of Moscow, situated on the banks of the Moskva River. Perched on those mighty banks and standing right at the city's cultural and historic centre, The Hotel Baltschug Kempinski Moscow holds court in regal splendour. Just yards away the evocative onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral, Red Square, the Kremlin and the famous GUM department store reflect the fin de cycle elegance which existed at the turn of the century. The edifice of the present day Hotel Baltschug Kempinski Moscow has always been a guest house of some description - an inn for merchants and traders, or a rooming house. Between 1928 and 1932 it operated as the Hotel Novomoscovskaya, and later became the Hotel Baltschug Kempinski Moscow. Now the hotel's 100 year old classic facade is all that remains of the original building, which dated back to 1898 and the reign of Tsar Nicolas II.

In 1989, the dynamic Kempinski Hotel Group began a visionary USD 86 million reconstruction to "create a heaven in the Russian capital in which a renaissance of culture and business could flourish". For those involved in the evolution of this grand scheme, it was and act of faith, a return to civility, luxury, and comfort, in a city whose future was beginning to shine with the promise of success.
Built entirely of quality materials from the West, the hotel's impressive exterior and spacious interior required vast quantities of lumber, glass, and brick - a triumph of architectural engineering and design. The renovation took a total of 600 truckloads of raw materials - the very best that could be found.
Those rigorous high standards of planning and constant attention to detail have resulted in a hotel that is as vital as the Moscow of the present, as authentic and historic as the Tsarist Moscow of the past, and as international as the Moscow of the future. Since it re-opened in 1991, the Hotel Baltschug Kempinski Moscow has won a listing in the exclusive international association The Leading Hotels of the World - the first hotel in the Russia's capital that has been extended this recognition.
